Do’s and Don’t’s of Detngling

Kinks, puffs, and curls can often turn into knots if not properly detangled from time to time. Save your luscious head of curls from knots and breakage with a couple of these do’s and don’t’s.

DON’T: attempt to detangle or comb through dry hair.  This may result in breakage and popping of the hair.

DO: add moisture to your hair prior to combing. Water is your friend and adds natural moisture to the hair.  Leave in conditioners such as Cantu Shea Butter Leave In and Kinky Curly’s Knot Today can also help with the detangling process.

DON’T: use fine tooth combs, such as rat-tails combs on your hair.

DO: use wide-tooth “shower combs” to comb through you hair.  One key brush is to have in your collection is a Denman Brush-perfect for curl definition and detangling.

DON’T: neglect your hair at night. Moving your head back and forth on your pillow at night causes friction which can result in dryness.

DO: Invest in a satin bonnet, scarf, or pillow case to protects your curls.  Also twisting or braiding your hair in plaits is a great way to protect your hair at night.
